Howard H. Fortmeyer, 88, with a smile on his face, pranks and jokes in his heart, passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2012 to meet his beloved Betty "Elizabeth" in Heaven. He was the owner of Fortmeyer's Truck Stop and Tire Center of Fort Wayne until he sold the station and retired in 1994. He served as a deputy sheriff for 17 years before he retired. He was a life member of the Scottish Rite Northern Masonic and Shriners where he loved to play the drums. A veteran of World War II, Navy LCI and a member of the American Legion Post 499. He graduated from Northside High School in 1944. He was preceded in death by his parents; Fred and Laura (Blessing) Fortmeyer; brother, Wayne; and his beloved wife of 66 years, Elizabeth (Gideon) Fortmeyer. Surviving are; daughter, Mary K. Carbaugh (Paul) of Fort Wayne, sons; Rodger Fortmeyer (Sheri) of Delray Beach FL, and Dr. Phillip Fortmeyer of Birmingham, AL; beloved grandchildren, Eric, Jennifer, Ingrid, Steve, Kevin, Sandy and Laura; 15 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren; nephew, Steve Fortmeyer; and nieces, Becky and Carol. A Celebration of Life Party will be held on Sunday, May 27th, 2012 from 1 to 5pm at the Sheriff's Reserve Center on Easterday Road. In keeping with his love of the Shrine and Sheriff's, memorials are to the Shrine Children's Hospital or The Allen County Sheriff's Riffle Range.
